Avios Earning Calculator

Calculate Points for Your Flight

While our main calculator helps you spend points on reward flights, this tool helps you calculate how many points you will earn when you pay cash for a flight.

Calculate Your Earnings

How Avios Earning Works

Base Fare & Distance

For most British Airways flights, you now earn Avios based on the price of your ticket (base fare + carrier charges). For some partner airlines, earning is still calculated based on the distance flown and your booking class.

Cabin Class

Flying in premium cabins (Premium Economy, Business, or First) significantly boosts your earning rate. On distance-based partner flights, higher cabin classes have higher multipliers applied to the miles flown.

Tier Status Bonus

Your Executive Club tier level adds a generous bonus to your earning rate per £1 spent:

  • Blue6 Avios / £1
  • Bronze7 Avios / £1
  • Silver8 Avios / £1
  • Gold9 Avios / £1

What Counts Towards Your Earn?

Qualifying Costs (Yes)

You earn Avios on these parts of your ticket:

  • Base Fare
  • Carrier-Imposed Charges (YQ)
  • Seat Selection Fees
  • Upgrade Fees
  • Extra Baggage Fees

Non-Qualifying Costs (No)

You do NOT earn Avios on these:

  • Government Taxes (e.g. APD)
  • Airport Service Fees
  • Booking / Service Fees

Earning on Partner Airlines

Earning Avios on partner airlines (like Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, or Japan Airlines) works differently depending on the airline and how you booked.

Spend-Based Partners

Flights on Iberia and American Airlines earn Avios based on the ticket price (spend-based) only if the ticket was issued by British Airways (ticket number starts with 125).

Distance-Based Partners

For most other partners, or if your ticket wasn't issued by BA, you earn based on the distance flown and your fare class (e.g. J, Y, O).

Pro Tip: Always check the single-letter fare class on your ticket confirmation (e.g. "Economy (O)"). This letter determines your earning percentage on distance-based partner flights.

Avios vs. Tier Points

It's easy to confuse the two, but they serve very different purposes.

Avios

The currency you spend on rewards (flights, upgrades, hotels). You can earn them from flying, credit cards, and shopping.

Tier Points

A score that resets every year. They determine your status (Bronze, Silver, Gold). You cannot spend them.

Real-World Earning Scenarios

The Short-Haul Commuter

Scenario: Flying London to Edinburgh in Economy (Euro Traveller).

Math: Low base fare (£50) x 6 Avios/£ (Blue member).

~300 Avios

"On cheap short-haul flights, you earn very few points. The fixed Reward Flight Saver cap on the spending side is often the better deal."

The Premium Leisure Traveller

Scenario: Flying London to New York in Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus).

Math: Higher base fare (£1,200) x 7 Avios/£ (Bronze member).

~8,400 Avios

"Premium cabins significantly boost your earning because the ticket price is higher. Bronze members earn 7 Avios per £1 versus 6 for Blue, giving you roughly 17% more points."

The Business Class Pro

Scenario: Flying London to Singapore in Business (Club World).

Math: High fare (£4,000) x 9 Avios/£ (Gold member).

~36,000 Avios

"High spend combined with Gold status yields massive points. This one trip earns enough for a return flight to Europe."

The Partner Airline Explorer

Scenario: Flying Qatar Airways (London to Doha) in Economy.

Math: Distance (3,200 miles) x 50% (Economy V class).

~1,600 Avios

"Distance-based earning on partners can be generous for long flights, even in Economy, provided your booking class qualifies."

Top Tips to Boost Your Balance

Double Dip with Amex

Pay for the flight with a British Airways American Express card to earn Avios on the spend plus the flight earning.

Part-Pay with Avios

If you reduce the cash cost using "Part Pay with Avios", you still earn Avios on the original full fare amount.

BA Holidays

Booking flight + hotel together often earns bonus Avios (1 per £1 spent) on top of the flight earning.
