What is an Avios point worth?

We use 1p per point as a ballpark figure. It is the value many experts use, but the real world is more complicated.

The value of an Avios point to you depends on numerous factors:

  • Where you fly (long-haul vs short-haul)
  • What cabin you fly in (Business Class typically offers better value than Economy)
  • Whether you use a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 Companion Voucher
  • What cash price you would have paid if Avios weren't available

You need to be sure you are getting substantially more for an Avios than your cost price to make it worthwhile. This is especially true because you are substituting something very liquid – cash – for something that is not very liquid at all.

Real-World Redemption Scenarios

The Long-Haul Leisure Traveller

1.14p

Andrew takes two long-haul Business Class holidays a year with his family. He uses a 2-4-1 Companion Voucher for one trip and pays cash for the other if needed.

Even paying high taxes, the savings against cash fares for Business Class are significant.

The Short-Haul Weekender (London)

2.1p

Jez and Louise use Avios for European short breaks from London. Cash fares are often high (£250+) for peak weekends.

Using Reward Flight Saver (£1 taxes) on expensive short-haul routes offers some of the highest value per point.

The Regional Connector

1.15p

Glynn and Sarah fly from Manchester via Heathrow. They pay double the Avios for the connection.

While better than cash in peak times, the extra Avios for the domestic leg reduces the overall value per point.

The Upgrade Hunter

1.3p

Charles and Vicky buy Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus) cash tickets and use Avios to upgrade to Business (Club World).

A smart way to fly Business for less, though high surcharges on upgrades eat into the value compared to a pure redemption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is the 'floor' value of an Avios point?

The absolute minimum value you should accept for an Avios point is 0.5p. This is because you can convert Avios to Nectar points at a rate that gives you 0.5p to spend at Sainsbury's, Argos, or eBay. If a flight redemption offers less than 0.5p per point in value, you are better off converting your points to Nectar and paying cash for the flight.

Q.Should I use Avios for long-haul Economy flights?

Generally, no. Long-haul Economy redemptions often represent poor value (around 0.75p per point) because of the high taxes and carrier charges British Airways adds. You can often find cash tickets for a similar total cost. Avios are best saved for premium cabins (Business or First) or short-haul flights.

Q.How does a Companion Voucher affect Avios value?

A British Airways American Express 2-4-1 Companion Voucher effectively doubles the value of your Avios for that redemption, as you get two tickets for the Avios cost of one. This is the single best way to maximise the value of your points, often pushing the value per point above 2p.

Q.Is it worth using Avios for upgrades?

Upgrading a cash booking with Avios can offer decent value (around 1.3p per point), but be aware that you will pay extra taxes and charges. It is often better value than a straight redemption if you don't have enough points for a full reward seat, but less valuable than a 2-4-1 booking.
