Is buying Avios worth it?
Use the live price offered to you and the cost of a real reward seat. The calculator compares both with the cash flight you would otherwise book.
This comparison assumes the reward seat is available and your bought Avios can be used in time. It excludes alternative uses, refunds, changes and future programme changes.
Use a specific redemption, not a speculative value
Buying Avios is easiest to assess when the reward seat is visible and you only need a top-up. Enter the total purchase cost after any bonus, then include every reward-flight cash charge.
The acquisition cost and redemption value should be read together. A purchase at 1.5p per Avios is not attractive for a redemption returning 1p. See the Avios value guide for comparison ranges.
Checks before paying
- Confirm the reward seat is still available for every traveller and sector.
- Use the final Avios purchase checkout price, including the actual bonus offered to you.
- Compare like-for-like cancellation, baggage and flexibility terms.
- Allow for the time it may take purchased Avios to reach your account.
- Avoid buying a large balance without a near-term use.
Frequently asked questions
It can be when you are topping up for a specific, available reward that is cheaper than the comparable cash fare. Buying speculatively is riskier because reward availability, prices and programme rules can change.
For this calculator, it is the comparable cash fare minus the reward taxes, fees and carrier charges. Buying the required Avios for more than that would make the trip cost more than paying cash, before considering other differences.
Enter the actual checkout price and the exact number of Avios you will receive, including any bonus. Do not rely on an expired or targeted headline offer.
